This week Jie Deng of SAP showed us via an ASUG webcast how to build a simple design studio applications with Design Studio 1.1, the next release. This is Part 1. Because future functionality is being discussed, the usual legal disclaimer applies that things discussed are subject to change.
In a prior blog I discussed the 1.1 sneak-peakprovided in a previous ASUG webcast.

Figure 1 shows that Design studio is the premium alternative to BEx WAD, providing mobile support to deploy applications to iPad, using SAP BW and Hana data sources. You can use it to build analytic and dashboards.

At design time Design Studio is WYSIWYG – what you see is what you get
In new version 1.1 panels are offered to provide more components to build more complex applications
The scripting language is a subset of JavaScript
You do not need to know program language to use it and you can use the Wizard mode with CTRL-space to walk you through the commands
It is based on the BI platform and you can leverage monitoring capabilities of BI Platform
You can have different themes and customizing options
Version 1.0 focused on supporting iPad with HTML5 technologies to any mobile device
iPad template to design an application for iPad purpose
It uses the BICS interface to read data from Hana & BW
Hana calc/analytic views can be a data source for Design Studio

Figure 4 shows that you have different deployment modes
You can run the application locally on computer
You can deploy to BI platform – BI platform run-time
What is new in release 1.1 is deploy application to BW and run the application using SAP BW Java run-time
No difference between feature/function just a matter of where you save

On the left is a cross tab, and the data is from BW

Figure 11 shows a new feature of Design Studio 1.1, called Advanced Properties
Jie showed how to update the background fill area

Figure 12 shows you can select a group of items and arrange them together – vertically or horizontally; another new feature

Figure 13 shows a panel, which is a grouping of components together. Why is it useful? You can move a group of components together, define a background color, and more.

Figure 14 shows the impacts of changing to a Mobile iPad theme. As you can see the dimension filter is bigger, with a larger cross tab too
